Move-In Day Pep Talk
Move-in day is around the corner. A proud, poignant, happy, sad, emotional rollercoaster of an experience. We’ve been there and we get it. You’ve got the basics covered (and if you don’t check out our post on move-in prep and our post on making the most of orientation).
Now for the nitty gritty real talk.
Is your student’s room less “decorated” than the rooms of floormates? That’s okay. This is likely your student’s first time getting to decide how their space looks - which posters, which pictures, which mis-matched colors. It’s GOOD to let them figure out how to create this space.
Are you worried that you didn’t do enough? You did. This launch is never neat and tidy. Students will have questions and worries. An open line of communication will allow you to step in and help when needed while allowing your student to make independent decisions.
Are you worried? Probably. Parents’ worries differ and students’ need differ. There is always something to worry about. But there are resources on campus to help your student learn to navigate challenges themselves and parents’ have the privilege (and responsibility) of serving as a backstop for a while. It’s normal to be worried.
This chapter involves iterations, learning, challenges, and eventually, success. As your student navigates this new chapter of their life, your role is to guide, support, and inspire. Your role hasn’t disappeared, it has just changed, and you can help pave the way for a fulfilling and successful first semester.
