When It Comes to College Tuition, Military Families Deserve Better From Some States, Especially Here in Virginia

These are challenging times for members of today's military. Not only are service men and women called upon for extended combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, some on the home front are being asked to lengthen their careers or return to active duty from the Reserves.Given the sacrifices that they are being asked to make, it is disturbing that many military families can't even seem to get fair treatment on tuition at state colleges and universities.

“SOCIAL COMPACT” FOR HIGHER EDUCATION EXPLORED AT DC CONFERENCE

Violence on Campus

The following article is courtesy of Inside Higher Ed.Each year, nearly 6 percent of female college students report a rape or attempted rape. Nine percent of men and 11 percent of women say they seriously considered suicide and 1.3 percent reported one attempt.Thirteen percent of female students report being stalked. And just 25 percent of all crimes on campuses were reported to a law enforcement authority of any kind.

Fraternity Fatalities

Two students died in fraternity-related incidents last week: one from injuries in a fight at Baldwin-Wallace College and one in an apparent hazing activity that involved drinking massive quantities of water at California State University at Chico.During this academic year, fatalities have already occurred involving fraternities or their parties at Colorado State University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Colorado, the University of Delaware and the University of Oklahoma.

Yeah, It Was The Roaring 90s Alright

The economic boom in the last decade of the 20th century has already been referred in some instant histories of the time as the "roaring 90s."A report released earlier this week by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reveals that the economy was not the only thing roaring in the 1990s. So were college tuition, and the amount of undergraduate borrowing done in order to meet those rising tuition costs.

It’s the Skills That Count: Helping Your Kids Acquire the Skills Employers Want

One of the great fears parents have about college education is that after all the time and expense, their son or daughter will have skills that are unmarketable, or he or she will be underemployed after graduation. I'm accustomed to people expecting me to provide them with the response that "employers want well-rounded individuals who love to learn for the sake of learning." I don't buy that response, though, because it creates a vision of the intellectual obesity portrayed weekly on TV shows like "Frasier" by the main character and his brother Niles.
